After traveling around and having to fend for ourselves at places where nobody was on hand, it was so great to have the personal human touch that fostered such excitement about learning more about the culture of the Southwest. Our family is still talking about "Miss Anna" and the things that were learned. As an added surprise the kids were given a selection of booklets that would encourage further learning and discovery. The kids love the badges and wear them with pride. She also shared a story about the Sleeping Ute Mountain which they enjoyed a lot.Īfter going over the Junior Ranger pledge, each child received their badge. The informational signs along the way were great.Īfter the walk Anna listened carefully (and patiently as they were trying to talk over each other) to what each child had learned and gave them all such positive feedback for their efforts. The kids really got involved with learning something new with the promise of earning a Junior Ranger badge. She gave each of our children age appropriate tasks to accomplish on our walk to the pueblo at the top of the hill. We were very fortunate to meet a wonderful volunteer on site who greeted us warmly and provided us with great information and maps about various other places in the area to visit. Our favorite stop was at the Canyon on the Ancients Museum even though it was closed on the day we arrived. The many areas we visited in Arizona, Utah and Colorado were great. We recently took our home schooled children on a trip to explore the southwest and learn about the culture. While Hovenweep can be done in an afternoon, the other two require more than a day each to see.

We probably could have budgeted four full days to visit all the sites. The area around Cortez has Hovenweep, Canyons of the Ancients, and Mesa Verde. Sounds elementary but the scenery here is really beautiful. Bring lots of water or Gatorade and use sunscreen. We visited during summer of 2019 and the weather was in the middle 90s F. Not strenuous or anything but wear good walking shoes.ģ. You'll be doing a decent amount of hiking. Standard passenger cars will be fine but if you drive any low-slung sports car, take things slowly.Ģ. Some access is down improved and semi-improved dirt roads. I would start at the visitor's center in Dolores and spend some time talking with the staff there to get a good itinerary planned out. Plan for a lot of driving between the different locations. The site is well reviewed so, instead, here's some logistical information that might help with your visit.ġ.
